Personal Project
My main interest lies in the field of comparative anatomy, I’m always drawn back to this area of science when planning new artworks. Having taken a little time to re-evaluate my art direction this year, I began this project with a new found focus. I wanted to try new ways of viewing anatomy within the living creature, experimenting in artistic techniques.
To create the final illustration, I drew the skin and skeletal layers separately. For the skeletal layer I used my favourite technique of stippling in fineliner pen, and for the skin layer I tried a cross-hatching technique in pencil. I was surprised with how much the light pencil work contrasted with the fineliner pen as I hadn’t compared the two in this way before. Adding colour digitally helped to merge the gap between the two styles, while keeping them separate enough to differentiate the two when layered on top of each other.
