The ‘Rutland Sea Dragon’

(2024)

Personal Project

My reconstruction of the ‘Rutland Sea Dragon', the largest ichthyosaur discovered in the UK when my project was started (approx 10m long). It lived 181.5 to 182 million years ago in the Jurassic period and was discovered in 2021 during maintenance works at Rutland Water Nature Reserve. It is believed to be the species Temnodontosaurus trigonodon.

For this project I wanted to try something new by reconstructing a fossil back into its living form. I began my research using books and online resources, compiling all my notes and sketches in a new sketchbook. The final illustrations were drawn from a 3D model in charcoal, then scanned digitally to add colour.
